How to use Gravel Calculator

  1. 1. Enter the area — a rectangle for a driveway or path, or several shapes.
  2. 2. Set the depth: about 2 inches for paths, 4 inches or more for driveways.
  3. 3. Pick the material so the weight uses the right density, or enter your supplier’s figure.
  4. 4. Read the tons and cubic yards to order, and add a price per ton for the cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?

Area (sq ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27 gives cubic yards; multiply by the material’s weight per cubic yard and divide by 2,000 for tons. A 10 × 50 ft driveway 4 inches deep is 6.17 cubic yards, about 8.6 tons of gravel.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

Roughly 2,600–3,000 lb (1.3–1.5 tons) depending on the stone, its size and moisture. The calculator uses typical values per material; your supplier’s figure is best.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

Usually 4–6 inches of compacted base plus 2–3 inches of top gravel, more on soft soil or for heavy vehicles. Paths and patios typically need 2–3 inches.

How much area does a ton of gravel cover?

At 2 inches deep, a ton of typical gravel covers about 115 square feet; at 4 inches, about 58 square feet.

Should I order extra gravel?

Yes — add 5–10% because gravel compacts and ground is rarely perfectly level. The calculator’s extra percentage covers that.

What is the difference between a ton and a metric tonne?

A U.S. (short) ton is 2,000 pounds; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg, about 2,205 pounds. Results show both.
