How to use Fraction Calculator

  1. 1. Pick Calculate, Simplify & convert or Decimal → fraction.
  2. 2. Type your numbers the way you write them: 3/4, 2 1/8, 5 or 0.75. Negative values work too.
  3. 3. Choose the operation. The answer updates as you type, as a simplified fraction, a mixed number, a decimal and a percent.
  4. 4. Open Show the steps to see the common denominator and how the result was simplified, then copy the result or a share link.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Find the least common denominator (LCD), rewrite both fractions with it, add the numerators and simplify. For 1/2 + 2/3 the LCD is 6, so 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6 = 1 1/6. The calculator shows each of these steps.

How do I enter a mixed number?

Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction, for example 2 1/8. For a negative mixed number, put the minus sign in front: -1 1/2.

How do I divide fractions?

Flip the second fraction (use its reciprocal) and multiply. 3/4 ÷ 1/2 becomes 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1 1/2.

Can it convert a repeating decimal to a fraction?

Yes. In Decimal → fraction, put the repeating digits in parentheses: 0.(3) gives 1/3 and 0.1(6) gives 1/6. Answers that repeat are shown with a bar over the repeating digits.

How do I round a decimal to the nearest 1/16 inch?

Choose Decimal → fraction and set Precision to Nearest 1/16. For example 0.3125 is exactly 5/16, and 0.3 rounds to 5/16 with a difference of +0.0125.

Are the results exact?

Yes. The calculator works with whole-number numerators and denominators of any size, so there are no floating-point rounding errors. Only the decimal and percent views are rounded, and repeating decimals are marked.
