Free · No sign-upHow to use PDF to Markdown
- 1. Drop a PDF with selectable text (for scanned PDFs, run OCR PDF first). It is read in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
- 2. Choose options: remove repeated headers, footers and page numbers, detect tables, keep bold/italic and links, and how page breaks should appear.
- 3. Check the preview — headings, lists and tables are rendered — or open the Markdown tab to edit the text directly.
- 4. Copy the Markdown or download the .md file for GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, a static site or an AI chat.
Frequently asked questions
How are headings detected?
The converter measures the font size of every line. The body text size is the most common one; larger sizes become # headings in order of size (largest = H1). Short lines set entirely in bold at body size become the next heading level down.
Does it convert tables?
Yes, best-effort. Rows whose text lines up in columns are turned into GitHub-flavored Markdown tables. Complex tables with merged cells or wrapped text may need a quick fix in the Markdown tab.
Are links kept?
Yes. Clickable links in the PDF become Markdown links [text](url). Only web and email links are kept; internal page jumps are dropped.
Can it convert scanned PDFs?
Not directly — a scanned PDF contains pictures of text. Run our OCR PDF tool first to add a text layer, then convert the result here.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read with pdf.js entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign-up or page limit.
Why use Markdown for AI tools?
Markdown keeps the structure of a document (headings, lists, tables) in plain text, so AI assistants, search indexes and documentation tools understand it better than raw PDF text.
