Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract the unpaid break. 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 h 30 min; minus a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours. Enter the break minutes in the break column and the calculator does this for every day.
What if a shift goes past midnight?
Enter the times as they are, for example in 22:00 and out 06:00. When the out time is earlier than the in time, the calculator counts the shift into the next day (8 hours in this example).
How is overtime calculated?
With the federal rule, hours over 40 in a workweek are overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate. The California option also pays 1.5ร for hours over 8 in a day and 2ร for hours over 12 in a day, and counts only regular hours toward the 40-hour week. The seventh-consecutive-day rule is not included.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 h 45 min is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. The calculator shows both formats for every day and for the total.
What does rounding to the nearest 15 minutes do?
Each clock-in and clock-out is rounded to the nearest quarter hour before the hours are added up, so 8:07 becomes 8:00 and 8:08 becomes 8:15. Employers that round must do it neutrally, so check your company policy and local law.
Is my time card saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded. Your times, rate and settings are saved only in this browser so they are still there next time. Use Clear times to reset the week.
