Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percent off?
Multiply the price by the percent and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. For example, 25% off $80 is $80 × 0.25 = $20 off, so you pay $60.
Is 30% off plus an extra 20% off the same as 50% off?
No. The extra 20% applies to the already reduced price: $100 becomes $70, then $70 minus 20% is $56, which is 44% off in total. The Stacked tab shows each step and the true combined percentage.
How do I find what percent off something was?
Subtract the price you paid from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100. A $120 item bought for $84 was ($120 − $84) ÷ $120 = 30% off.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount as a decimal). An item on sale for $60 at 25% off originally cost $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. Subtracting 25% from $60 would give the wrong answer.
How does the BOGO calculator work?
It groups your items into sets of buy X, get Y and applies the discount to the Y items in each full set, assuming every item costs the same. It also tells you when adding an item to your cart would make it free or discounted. For X for $Y deals, leftover items are charged at the regular price.
Is sales tax charged before or after the discount?
This calculator adds tax to the discounted price, which is how most store discounts are taxed. In many states a manufacturer's coupon does not lower the taxable price, so check your receipt. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.
