Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to D− = 0.7 and F = 0), multiplied by the course credits, added up and divided by the total credits. P (pass) and W (withdrawn) grades are left out.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or college courses, so it can go above 4.0. This calculator does not add a bonus to an F. Many high schools use these values, but some use different ones, so check your school's policy.
Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.33?
Most US schools cap the scale at 4.0, so an A+ counts the same as an A. Some colleges give an A+ 4.33; switch the grade scale to 4.33 if yours does.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Open Include previous semesters and enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits you have completed. The calculator combines those quality points with this semester's courses and divides by the total credits.
How does the Grade I need mode work?
It solves (target GPA × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ new credits. If the result is above the maximum grade, it tells you the target can't be reached with those credits and roughly how many credits of perfect grades it would take.
Is this GPA calculator official?
No. It is a free estimate that runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded. Colleges and high schools set their own scales, weighting and rounding, so your transcript or registrar has the official GPA.
