Frequently asked questions

Which tax year does this paycheck calculator use?

Tax year 2026. Federal brackets and standard deductions ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household) come from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, the Social Security wage base of $184,500 from the SSA, and the 401(k) limit of $24,500 from IRS Notice 2025-67.

How is federal income tax estimated?

The calculator figures your yearly taxable income (gross pay minus pre-tax 401(k) and benefits, minus the standard deduction), applies the 2026 brackets for your filing status and divides the tax evenly across your paychecks. It does not include tax credits, dependents, other income, itemized deductions or W-4 adjustments, so your employer's actual withholding can be different. It is an estimate, not tax advice.

How are Social Security and Medicare calculated?

Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax that employers withhold on wages above $200,000. Pre-tax health insurance, FSA and HSA payroll deductions reduce these wages; 401(k) contributions do not.

Does it include state and local income tax?

Only as a simple estimate: enter a flat percentage and it is applied to your wages after pre-tax deductions. Real state taxes often use brackets, credits and local add-ons, so check your state revenue department for exact figures. States with no wage income tax can leave it at 0.

What is the overtime deduction option?

For 2025 through 2028, workers can deduct the premium part of FLSA overtime pay (the half in time-and-a-half), up to $12,500 or $25,000 for joint filers, phasing out above $150,000 or $300,000 of income. Married filing separately is not eligible. You claim it on your tax return, so it usually shows up as a larger refund rather than a larger paycheck.

Is my salary information saved or sent anywhere?

No. All math runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded. Your last entries are remembered in this browser only (“Reset settings” under the tool clears them). A share link only exists if you click Copy share link, and it puts your inputs in the part of the address after the # sign, so only people you send it to can see them.
