Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to a link’s query string, such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale. Google Analytics reads them to show which campaign, channel and source brought each visit.
Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term (paid keywords), utm_content (to tell apart two links or ads) and utm_id (a campaign ID for importing cost data) are optional.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. GA4 treats Facebook, facebook and FACEBOOK as three different sources, which splits your reports. That’s why the builder lowercases values by default.
What medium should I use?
Use values GA4’s default channel groups recognize: cpc for paid search, paid_social for social ads, social for organic posts, email for newsletters, display for banners, affiliate or referral for partners.
Should I add UTM tags to links on my own website?
No. Tagging internal links restarts the session and overwrites the visitor’s real source, which corrupts your data. Only use UTM tags on links that point to your site from somewhere else.
Will UTM tags break my URL?
No. The builder keeps existing query parameters and the #anchor, replaces any old utm_ values and encodes special characters. Websites simply ignore parameters they don’t use.
