Video transcript
- Pick the subject. Choose People for portraits so fine hair edges are kept. Auto also works.
- Add your photo. Drop a JPG or PNG. The AI model runs right here in your browser.
- Check the cut-out. The checkerboard shows the parts that are now transparent.
- Download the PNG. PNG keeps the transparent background, ready for slides, stickers or a new backdrop.
How to use 🪄 AI Background Remover
- 1. Drop a photo (PNG, JPG, WEBP and more) into the box. The first time, the AI model downloads to your browser and is cached for later visits.
- 2. Wait while the background is removed on your device. It uses WebGPU if available, otherwise WebAssembly, and keeps full resolution up to 4096 px.
- 3. Under Background, choose Transparent, White, Black, Blur original, a gradient such as Sunset or Studio, Custom color or Your image.
- 4. Click Download PNG for a transparent or composited image, or Download JPG for a smaller file. Use New image to start over.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AI background remover free, and is there a limit?
Yes, it is free and unlimited, with no sign-up or watermark. Because the AI runs on your own device, the only practical limit is your computer’s memory. Output is kept at full resolution up to 4096 pixels on the long side; larger photos are scaled to fit.
Are my photos uploaded when I remove a background?
No. The AI model (MODNet for people, U²-Net for objects) is downloaded once and cached, and then your photo is processed entirely in your browser. Your last cut-out is kept only in this browser’s storage so you can restore it; nothing is sent to our server.
How do I make a photo background transparent?
Drop the image, wait for the cut-out and keep the Transparent option selected. Then click Download PNG. PNG keeps the transparency; if you download a JPG instead, transparent areas are filled with white because JPG can’t store transparency.
How do I put a new background behind a person in a photo?
After the cut-out, pick Your image and choose a background photo, which is scaled to cover the frame. You can also pick a solid Custom color, a preset gradient like Ocean or Studio, or Blur original for a portrait-mode look.
Why is the background remover slow or failing on my computer?
The first run has to download the AI model, and older devices without WebGPU run it more slowly on the CPU. Very large images can run out of browser memory. Try a smaller photo and the latest Chrome or Edge, which support WebGPU.
Which images work best with the AI background remover?
Auto mode uses a portrait model for people and an objects model for products, pets, cars and other subjects; you can switch between them. A clear main subject gives the cleanest edges. Busy scenes, glass, thin leaves or fine hair against a similar color can leave soft spots. Any image your browser can open works, and results download as PNG or JPG.
