🔒 Private · Free · No upload▶ Watch: How to upscale an image with AI (0:32)
Video transcript
- Choose the AI model. Best quality keeps the most detail. Fast is quicker on older computers.
- Add a small image. Drop a low-resolution photo. The model is downloaded once, then cached.
- Compare before and after. The new image has twice the width and height, with sharper edges.
- Download the PNG. Save the upscaled copy for print, slides or a sharper thumbnail.
How to use 🔍 AI Image Upscaler
- 1. Drop a photo into the upload box or click to choose one. PNG, JPG, WebP and other common image formats your browser can open work.
- 2. On the first run, wait while the AI upscaling model downloads; a progress bar shows the percentage, and it’s cached for later visits.
- 3. The image is enlarged 2× tile by tile on your device, using WebGPU when available. The status bar shows the tile count and progress.
- 4. Check the result preview and the before-and-after pixel size, then click ⬇ Download upscaled PNG to save the enlarged image with “-2x” added to the file name.
Frequently asked questions
Is the AI image upscaler free and unlimited?
Yes. It’s free, needs no sign-up and has no daily limit because the AI runs on your own device instead of a paid server. The main limit is size: photos larger than 2,000 pixels on the long side are first fitted to 2,000 px, so the maximum output is 4,000 px.
Are my photos uploaded to a server when I upscale them?
No. Upscaling runs in your browser with an AI model (Swin2SR for Best quality, Real-ESRGAN for Fast) through ONNX Runtime Web, on your GPU (WebGPU) or on several CPU cores (WebAssembly). The first run downloads the model file, which is then cached; your image itself is never uploaded.
How do I upscale an image to 2x without losing quality?
Drop the image in and let the AI process it. Instead of simply stretching pixels, the Swin2SR model predicts fine detail and sharpens edges while doubling the width and height. Starting from the highest-quality original you have gives the best result, and the output is a lossless PNG.
Why is the AI upscaler slow on my computer?
The model runs locally, so speed depends on your device. Browsers with WebGPU (such as recent Chrome or Edge) use the graphics card and are much faster; others fall back to WebAssembly on the CPU. Large photos are split into many tiles, so they take longer. The status bar shows progress tile by tile.
Can I upscale an image 4x with this tool?
Each run enlarges the image 2×. You can run the upscaled PNG through the tool again for more enlargement, but keep in mind inputs over 2,000 px are fitted to 2,000 px first, so the output tops out at 4,000 px on the long side.
What format is the upscaled image saved in?
The result is always a PNG file, which keeps every detail without compression artifacts. PNGs can be large, so if you need a smaller file for the web, convert the result to JPG or WebP afterward with one of our image converters.
